Director of Product and Growth
Job Description
Chalkbeat is a fast-growing, mission-driven media company. We’re working to build a new model for local, public-interest journalism that can serve all those who care about educational equity.
Started in 2014 with a strong grassroots reader base, our team now produces high-value digital journalism from bureaus in New York, Colorado, Indiana, and Tennessee, with more locations to come.
We’re searching for a director of product and growth to lead our efforts in building the tools and systems we need to make smart, data-driven decisions that expand and loyalize our readership. Reporting directly to the CEO and leading a growing team, the successful candidate will work closely with our editorial, community, revenue, and operations staff to continue making Chalkbeat’s ambitious vision of sustainable, high-impact journalism a reality.
Key responsibilities:
➢ Define our core user personas via market research and analytics and develop a relevant growth strategy
➢ Set and own ambitious readership goals that map to our social impact values
➢ Lead our product development process by working with key stakeholders to create the roadmaps that best benefit Chalkbeat’s mission and sustainability goals
➢ Increase reader engagement via a scaled outreach strategy, improved user experience across our digital properties, and personalized content delivery
➢ Hire and supervise a growing team, including a full-stack engineer and a product associate
➢ Expand our data-driven learning culture by helping reporters keep readers and the impact of their work in mind from story selection to production and promotion
➢ Work with Chalkbeat’s award-winning editorial team to create engaging, high-impact journalism that helps us reach and inform the widest possible group of those who care about educational equity

➢ Ability to take feedback from a diverse set of stakeholders, synthesize, and implement
➢ Leadership qualities, including the ability to motivate and inspire others, hold others accountable, and a willingness to take responsibility for decisions
➢ Tech fluency and an ability to work effectively with engineers
➢ Understanding of good user experience/design
➢ Effective project management and ability to facilitate rapid iteration of products
➢ Strong strategic thinking

➢ Strong interest in or knowledge of the education and journalism fields
➢ Prior experience on a remote team
