Position Overview

The Special Education Coordinator (SEC) is responsible for setting a powerful vision for student achievement and motivating others to follow that vision, especially for students with exceptionalities.  Through collaboration, coaching, and support, the SEC will help build a staff belief in and high expectations for all students.  The Special Education Coordinator works to build partnerships with teachers in order to meet the vast range of student needs that arise throughout the school year and will play a key role in building relationships with parents in order to have a broad and deep impact on all of our students.  The SEC manages and supports his or her team in implementation of programming and compliance with federal regulations related to services provided our neediest students.  Their leadership will result in an instructional program and school environment that prepares every student for success in college and in life.  The Special Education Coordinator reports to the school leader.


Duties and Responsibilities:

The Special Education Coordinator manages and oversees all functions of the special education program for their individual school site, including the following duties:

  • Manage all special education programming including driving compliance,  monitoring special education students’ academic progress, managing SPED staff, and monitoring all contract service providers in service delivery.
  • Support teachers with students that struggle by building strong partnerships with key constituents, assisting with targeted academic and behavioral intervention plans, observing students and coaching teachers, and attending relevant grade level, department, and leadership meetings to act as a support, resource, and supervisor where need be.
  • Coordinate the Response to Intervention program by overseeing all federal compliance and intervention team and team members.
  • Manage special education and support team staff members by providing a clearly articulated vision, strong coaching and management, providing individual goals and accountability measures, and overall change management.
  • Go above and beyond in any need that may arise at the school or as directed by school leadership.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (required); Master’s Degree in special education (highly preferred).
  • A minimum of 3 years teaching.
  • At least 3 years of work in a special education leadership. Ability to effectively manage instructional and non-instructional staff.
  • Ability to evaluate instructional programs and teaching effectiveness.
  • Excellent communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to exercise excellent judgment in decision‐making.
  • Knowledge of the laws, rules, procedures, and programs specifically related to the operation of a special education program.
