Job Description

Background/IRC Summary:  Since 1999, the IRC has developed partnerships with New York City public schools, community-based organizations and local colleges and universities to support the positive development of refugee youth and their communities in New York City.  The Education and Learning Program provides year-round programming working directly with refugee youth, their parents and families, and their schools.

Job Overview/Summary: The Newcomer Youth Summer Academy (NYSA) is a five-week program that prepares newly arrived refugee youth to succeed at their grade level in the New York City public school system. Up to 130 students aged 5 – 21 from over 20 countries will participate in academic, creative arts, physical education, and social-emotional learning classes. Field trips are held on Fridays.

Academic Lead Teachers are responsible for lesson planning and delivery. At the Lower School levels (K-15th), the NYSA Academic Lead Teachers will instruct a self-contained classroom, teaching Phonics, Literacy, and Math. At the Upper School levels (6–12th) Academic Lead Teachers will be responsible for specialized content instruction in one of three specific subjects: English Language Arts, Math, or Social Studies.

Each Academic Lead Teacher is expected to design pre- and post-assessments. Academic Lead Teachers are responsible for creating and submitting culturally relevant daily lesson plans and associated slide decks and materials. Given the student body’s varied English language acquisition levels, life, and formal education experiences. The Academic Lead Teacher must consistently plan for differentiated, trauma-informed instruction and apply a sheltered instructional approach to guiding English Language Learners. Throughout their classroom activities, the Academic Lead Teachers will be encouraged to contribute to the Program’s goals of fostering students’ social-emotional development and building a strong sense of community among the students and staff.

Classroom Culture Lead Teachers play an important role, leading classroom culture, rituals, and routines. Classroom Culture Lead Teachers work with a single class level throughout the program (K-12), providing support and continuity for their class throughout the program. Classroom Culture Lead Teachers are responsible for planning and leading daily mindfulness, facilitating small-group instruction as per the Academic Lead Teacher’s plans, working with students one-on-one, and providing additional sheltered instruction support for multilingual learning.

Classroom Culture Lead Teachers are directly responsible for behavior management in alignment with Academy philosophy and classroom guidelines.  They are primarily responsible for leading their classroom Peer Mentors, and they play a critical role in ensuring consistent, timely communication among Academic Lead Teachers, Peer Mentors, Administration, and students’ families.

Classroom Culture Lead Teachers are responsible for observing, assessing, recording, and monitoring students’ individual progress.  This requires an understanding of the IRC School Readiness indicators, gathering input from other staff to assess individual students’ school readiness assets and needs.

The Social Emotional Learning Teacher will lesson plan for the daily instruction of Social-Emotional Learning content. They will adapt and implement curriculum across all grade levels in support of students’ social-emotional development. The Social Emotional Learning Teacher will instruct 12 lessons each week: two SEL lessons per week per student group (three Lower School groups plus three Upper School groups.) The three, daily, hour-long lessons are held between 12:30 pm and 3:30 pm, Monday – Thursday.

Following pre-program training, the SEL Teacher will be expected to understand how their contributions fit into the larger Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) model for supporting students at the Academy and liaise with other professionals accordingly, especially the classroom teaching staff and the Student Support Team.

The Physical Education Teacher will design and implement a six-week curriculum that builds students’ knowledge, skills, and interest in physical education. The Physical Education Teacher will contribute to the Program’s goals of fostering students’ social-emotional development and building a strong sense of community among the students and staff.

  • Training: July 5th, 6th, 7th,2023: Up to 24 hours of training, 9:00AM – 5:00PM
  • Foundational online training modules to be completed independently ahead of synchronous staff training dates

Working Environment:  NYSA takes place in a centrally located school (TBD) in New York City.  All applicants must be willing to relocate to the New York City area for the entirety of the Academy.
