About South Bend Empowerment Zone

South Bend Community Schools Corporation (SBCSC) is in a historic period of change and innovation. Recently, the State Board of Education approved a plan to create a transformation zone within South Bend. The goal of this zone is to accelerate improvement in several schools by empowering them with additional autonomy and providing them with support partners to guide them through the work of school redesign. SBEZ is uniquely poised to re-focus and transform one middle and four elementary schools into student-centered environments where each child has the opportunity to acquire the academic and personal skills to succeed in the college or career of his or her choice. SBEZ is committed to supporting and developing talented and committed Instructional Leaders and providing the appropriate supports to schools to ensure all students can be successful. 

The central philosophy of SBEZ is the empowerment of leaders and educators at each school to best use the resources available to educate and develop their students. At each SBEZ school, Instructional Leaders work alongside Teacher Leadership Teams to design and implement customized School Plans which serve as the guiding templates for school transformation. SBEZ schools have autonomy over their budget, staffing structure, calendar, schedule, curriculum, and professional development.

 

Position Overview

This person will support the important work of the Zone Chief to ensure that zone schools are well supported logistically and operationally so that principals can focus on delivering excellent academic results for students. You will have the opportunity to work alongside talented school teams and a driven zone leader in an innovative structure and foster relationships across the zone and district. 

Responsibilities

This position will serve a critical role as support to the Zone Chief, schools, and families. This person will be expected to engage in three core functions with responsibilities that include but are not limited to:

Administrative Support to Zone Chief:

  • Manage Zone Chief’s calendar, scheduling, and travel
  • Support the Zone Chief in frequent meetings with schools on talent, budget, and other school planning items. Support may include taking careful notes, circulating next steps, and monitoring specific action items
  • Support a project management process for ensuring that principals follow all steps in the school planning process on time
  • Support in preparing for professional development sessions with educators, including sending meeting invitations, agenda-setting, room set-up, etc.
  • Support Zone Chief in coordinating meetings, setting agendas, and ensure follow up on critical tasks
  • Follow-up with Zone Chief to ensure prompt decisions on time-sensitive items and support in information-gathering to ensure decisions are appropriately informed

Operations Support:

  • Create Zone-level budgets, forecasts, and reports
  • Ensure accurate accounting, bookkeeping, and expense reimbursement for Zone non-profit
  • Manage contracts, procurement, and grant flows
  • Coordinate with district finance department as needed
  • Coordinate with district personnel regarding school facilities issues as needed
  • Coordinate with district transportation, food service, maintenance, and IT departments as needed
  • Coordinate with HR to execute talent decisions as needed
  • Set-up and manage zone data systems and integration with district sources/requirements
  • Prepare reports on school performance data for zone, schools, and board

Represent SBEZ to Schools, Community, and Corporation, as needed:

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for families, community, and the Corporation
  • Coordinate visits from external parties or other district members to zone schools
  • Develop and manage our social media presence, including the establishment of a Zone Facebook page, Twitter account, and webpage

 Special school-based projects as assigned

Required

  • Excellent organizational abilities

  • Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving capabilities
  • Belief and alignment with Zone’s core beliefs and philosophy, including the belief that every child can excel academically and that every family deserves partnership and respect

Ideal (Not Required)

  • Prior successful experience as an administrative assistant to a CEO or Executive Director
  • Prior successful experience working at a start-up organization or program
  • Fluency in written and oral Spanish

Competitive salary and benefits commensurate with qualifications and experience
