Founded in 1992, the Barbara and Edward Netter Center for Community Partnerships is the University’s primary vehicle for advancing civic and community engagement at Penn. It brings together the resources and assets of both the University and the wider community to help solve universal problems such as poverty, health inequities, environmental sustainability, and inadequate, unequal education as they are manifested in the University’s local geographic area of West Philadelphia and Philadelphia at large. The Netter Center (Netter) develops and helps implement democratic, mutually transformative, place-based partnerships between Penn and West Philadelphia that advance research, teaching, learning, practice, and service and improve 1 the quality of life on campus and in the community. Netter works with and serves as a model for other higher education institutions across the United States and around the world. The Netter Center’s university-assisted community schools (UACS) is a strategy to educate, engage, empower, and serve all members of the community in which the school is located and engage students (K-16+) in real world, community problem solving.
Job Responsibilities:
The position will plan, coordinate, and implement UACS Sports programs. This position will be largely UACS school-site based with some administrative time spent on campus. This position will conduct on-going program communications Netter staff, University colleagues, and with school leadership. The position will provide direct support to K12 students, staff, and Penn students engaged in the program. This position will also work closely with Netter staff, school Principals, Deans and Climate Managers to schedule and plan supports that meet school-wide health and fitness goals for students. This position will support program development by providing program updates and reports and site visits as part of fundraising and stewardship activities; purchase equipment and supplies, document program activities, and coordinate and implement program data collection and evaluation.
This position will supervise 1 full-time staff, 4-6 temporary staff and numerous Penn Student volunteers, work-study students and academic interns who engage in the program. This position will provide direct coordination, coaching, and technical assistance to the Penn students engaged in the program.
This position is responsible for providing a safe, inclusive environment for sports, games, and play during the school day, afterschool and summer. They will attend regular stakeholder meetings and plan with the school leadership and Netter center staff. This position will also implement all required program reporting and compliance, including that of funders and the Netter Center.
The position will help contribute to the field of sports-based youth development and UACS broadly by being part of research and presenting it to partners and visitors to the Netter Center from around the world.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, and 2 to 3 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
- Experience supporting school-based health initiatives and/or sports programs. The ideal candidate has at least 3 years of experience specifically engaging a range of K12 youth in sports and fitness activities. A strong candidate will have experience in urban education, supervision, program management and evaluation.
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and foster high quality connections and relationships is critical.
- Must be collaborative, flexible, and work productively with diverse groups.
- Must be able to engage in sports and fitness activities, stand for long periods of time, and lift heavy objects.
- This position may involve exposure to outdoor weather conditions for extended periods.
Position Compliance Requirements: Once or while you are completing the University of Pennsylvania onboarding process, you will need to complete additional documents that are largely required by Netter Center funders.
