Assistant Superintendent
Job Summary:
The Assistant Superintendent reports directly to the Superintendent, oversees all matters as defined by the Superintendent, and is their representative in lieu of the Superintendent. The Assistant Superintendent handles a wide range of matters of institutional importance on behalf of the Superintendent. The Assistant Superintendent leads strategic initiatives and special projects as assigned by the Superintendent to ensure the viable operation of Mesa County Valley School District 51 and maintains constant and timely communication with the Superintendent regarding the day-to-day operation of MCVSD51. The Assistant Superintendent ensures that the Superintendent’s directives are implemented and represent MCVSD51.
- Provide chief support for the Superintendent and supportive liaison between the Superintendent, Board of Education, and administrative staff.
- Managing ongoing projects initiated by the Superintendent connected to the Strategic Plan.
- Directly handling matters of school district importance; including preparing District level reports and managing special project initiatives.
- Directing District resources toward the safety and security needs of students and staff is done in conjunction with recommendations from the District Crisis Team and through BOE input/directive.
- Working directly with the District Athletic Directors to establish the future vision, current goals, and strategic plan for this large and complex department. The Assistant Superintendent ensures their alignment with the District’s mission and goals
- Directly supervising Communications Department staff. The Assistant Superintendent has oversight and provides daily direction to internal and external messaging.
Primary Areas of Focused Responsibility:
COMMUNICATIONS AND PUBLIC RELATIONS: Directly supervising Communications Department staff the Assistant Superintendent has oversight and provides daily direction to internal and external messaging. The Assistant Superintendent often represents and champions the organization’s events, strategic initiatives, and policies through print and video media interviews. The Assistant Superintendent represents the highest level of executive leadership and is able to convey an understanding of BOE directives, district policies, current concerns and initiatives to staff and the public. Assistant Superintendent directs the communications staff delegating interviews, responses for information or inquiries, attendance at events, and other daily communications activity according to District needs and staff abilities.
SAFETY AND SECURITY: Directing District resources toward the safety and security needs of students and staff is done in conjunction with recommendations from the District Crisis Team and through BOE input/directive. Providing leadership and guidance, this role works closely with the Director of Safety and Security to ensure all District plans for safety and loss control are implemented including establishing inspection, investigation and response protocols and procedures. Reviewing unusual or concerning incidents with the Director is a key role in determining the communications needs/procedures and follow-up for incidents, investigations and in how the District handles safety complaints. While overseeing this function for the District the Assistant Superintendent has a role of collaboration and partnership with internal and external stakeholders to manage the safety and security needs of ALL stakeholders.
ATHLETICS AND ACTIVITIES SUPPORTS: Working directly with the District Athletic Director to establish the future vision, current goals, and strategic plan for this large and complex department the Assistant Superintendent ensures their alignment with the District’s mission and goals. This role is a support for the Director and in assessing needs, allocating resources, and evaluating the effectiveness of all Athletic and Activities programming for more than 50 schools’ extra-curricular functions. The Assistant Superintendent monitors general operations intervening as needed or in response to unusual or special circumstances; more directly this role participates in and supervises the establishment of processes and accountabilities for any possible impacts of system failures, emergency responses, and any needed corrective actions/policies/procedures.
DISTRICT 51 FOUNDATION:
Assistant Superintendent works directly with the D51 Foundation Board of Directors to ensure its mission and focus are in support of the District’s mission and goals. Assistant Superintendent is responsible for guiding and helping the foundation to prioritize projects and on-going work according to District needs. This role also works in collaboration with Board members and the Executive Director to establish the Foundation’s annual strategic plans, including funding raising efforts. The Assistant Superintendent also oversees the supervision for the Foundation’s Executive Director position.

STAFF SUPERVISION AND DEVELOPMENT: Supervision and evaluation is conducted in the framework of program goals and expectations including a variety of human resources responsibilities but not limited to:
- Interviewing, hiring, training, promoting, planning, and assigning work,
- Conducting performance evaluations, rewarding and disciplining employee conduct,
- Addressing employee/student complaints and resolving problems.
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in education plus additional coursework/experience required for certification or licensure*
- Minimum of five years of experience in building or district level administration role preferred;
- Proven experience working within a large organization to achieve a change vision or implementing change initiatives;
- Attend and complete all staff development training as required by state law or as directed by the Superintendent.
- Must hold or be eligible for a Colorado Principal/Administrator’s License
Working Conditions:
260 days/year
