Summary:
The Chief Academic Officer is a senior leadership team member and provides administrative oversight in developing, achieving, and maintaining educational programs and services for all students in alignment with the Strategic Plan and Blueprint APS. The Chief Academic Officer directs the operation, development, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of instructional programs and staff in the Division of Teaching and Learning. The Chief Academic Officer accelerates learning for every Aurora Public School (APS) student every day by advocating relentlessly for and supporting the people, practices, and policies that drive academic success.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Weekly 25%
Leads and partners with the Executive Directors of Curriculum and Instruction, Student Services, Professional Learning, and other subdivision staff reporting to those executive directors in order to develop instructional policies, practices, and programs that create a
climate of equity and inclusion that respects, values, and responds to the diversity of students, staff, parents, and the community; implements a systemic process that identifies and addresses inequalities that create barriers to student engagement and achievement; develops, organizes, and implements professional development opportunities for all staff with an emphasis on diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Weekly 20%
Provides leadership and facilitates collaboration with departments to foster an environment that is student-focused and results-oriented, has a clear shared vision of great teaching and learning, builds educator capacity and investment, is data-driven, promotes inclusion for all, narrows the gaps between the highest and lowest performing students, and focuses on accountability to ensure that all students thrive and succeed.

Engages stakeholders in achieving the district’s shared vision for teaching and learning and leads the development of the District’s Unified Improvement Plan.

Identifies key instructional strategies to support the school system, oversees instructional programs, and recommends changes/additions based on research and established goals.

Leads the interpretation of curriculum, instructional changes, and outcomes to the Board of Education, administration, staff, and the community by demonstrating a deep knowledge of high-quality curriculum and instructional materials.

Provides leadership to the administrative staff of the Division of Teaching & Learning in developing the district’s strategic plan and coordinating the activities, functions, and responsibilities of their departments, which strengthen the district’s instructional core and align with school system goals.

Collects, analyzes, and uses assessment, personnel, student, and other forms of data. Utilize data and research, including assessment data, to continuously improve instructional programs, staff training, and school services.

Collaborates with the Division of School Leadership and Support and community leaders in developing, identifying, and implementing best practices for continuous improvement of instructional delivery and success of all schools.

Oversees the coordination of professional development for instructional staff, including but not limited to curriculum implementation, best instructional practice, and data-informed
instruction.

Models the characteristics of effective leadership, including energy, integrity, high-level communication skills, and strategic thinking processes.

Ensures all work is performed in accordance with standards, federal and state regulations, and accreditation standards to meet the district’s mission, vision, and goals.

Provides leadership in all assigned department functions, including budgets, program priorities, and performance standards; participates in budget development and long-range financial planning at the executive level.
Daily 5% Perform other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING: Master’s degree required. Ph.D. or Ed.S preferred.
EXPERIENCE: More than 5 years of experience in building/site administration and instructional leadership.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, EQUIPMENT & OTHER:
Advanced oral and written communication, interpersonal, public relations, instruction, curriculum, facilitation, management, decision making, collaboration and organizational skills. Advanced knowledge of curriculum, children with special needs, instruction, administration, and budgeting. Operating knowledge of and experience with personal computer, laptop computer, cell phone, Outlook, Oracle, and Microsoft Word.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS:
Active Colorado Principal or Administrator license. Valid Colorado driver’s license.
SUPERVISION/TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITY:
Directly supervises Executive Director of Curriculum & Instruction, Executive Director of Student Services, Executive Director of Professional Learning, Assistant to the Chief
Academic Officer, and other subdivision staff reporting to those executive directors. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; promoting and transferring employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding, disciplining, and terminating employees; and
addressing complaints and resolving problems.
BUDGET RESPONSIBILITY:
Manage and direct the Teaching & Learning budget, District Professional development budget and federal entitlements for Culturally & Linguistically Diverse Education (CLDE) and Exceptional Student Services (ESS). Seek input from directors, but responsible for developing, administering, monitoring, and coordinating the budget and initiating requisitions.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, and sit. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
