The Communications Manager is part of Rocketship’s National Network Support Team and is responsible for managing internal communications across the network and supporting our public communications strategy. The goal of internal communications at Rocketship is to keep our employees informed and engaged in a unified understanding of our organizational goals, values, and impact. We aim to inspire, educate, and empower our teams to amplify their voice in our movement to improve equity and excellence in public education. In this role you will lead internal listening campaigns to inform our strategy, design annual storytelling campaigns to engage our staff, run internal communications training to build staff capacity, and own the strategy and execution of internal communications channels, among other responsibilities. The role requires someone with solid project management skills, a strong command of communications, and excellent writing skills. We are seeking a versatile communications professional who takes a strategic, audience-specific approach to all communications projects. Someone who is resourceful and comfortable in a “roll-up-your-sleeves” environment.  Most importantly, we are looking for someone with a deep and personal passion for social impact who is driven to advance our movement to create educational equity in disadvantaged communities across our country. The Communications Manager reports to Rocketship’s Associate Director of Communications.

Essential Functions

    • Develop and execute a strategic internal communications plan, aligning messaging with our culture, mission and strategic goals. This includes an initial communications audit and listening campaign.
    • Work with leaders and partners throughout the organization to support proactive and reactive communications needs, determining essential messages and the right channels to deliver them. Oversee all internal communications and align messaging, messengers, channels, and timing as-needed.
    • Understand different internal audiences and tailor messages to each audience and the relevant strategic objective.
    • Build internal communications capacity of regional and network leaders through trainings, resource creation, and partnership on narrative development

Qualifications

    • Professional experience in communications either as an internal or external communications specialist in-house at an organization.
    • Strong passion and commitment to social justice and improving equity in public education.
    • Experience running internal communications campaigns – including experience with focus groups, feedback surveys, audience segmentation, message development, training staff, and content development.
    • Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
    • Capable of managing detailed work plans and schedules with cross-department dependencies.
    • Team player with strong relationship-building skills.
    • Experience working with leaders at all levels of an organization.
    • Entrepreneurial and creative spirit and enjoy working independently.
    • Bachelor’s degree required, Masters Degree preferred.
    • 5-7 years of experience in communications and/or education.
    • (Preferred) You have experience working in  an education organization, preferably in a K-12 setting.
    • (Preferred) Candidates based in the San Francisco  Bay Area are preferred.  We will  also consider candidates based in Washington D.C., Nashville, or Milwaukee. This position will require occasional domestic travel and some evening hours for events and community meetings.
