Job Description

All Detroit children deserve to dare, dream and do big things. It starts with a quality education.

We are a non-profit committed to helping Detroit children receive the quality education they deserve. We do this by making leaders stronger, teachers more effective and school systems more successful. By being laser-focused on public school quality, we are investing in the hopes, dreams, and future of Detroit’s children.

The Role:

As the Data & Insights Analyst, you will build on our data infrastructure and support the evidence gathering that drives our organization’s decision-making. You will build tools and analyze data to provide insights for internal and external audiences. While reporting to the Partner & CEO, the Data & Insights Analyst will work closely with all members of the DCF team to support the organization’s success and help DCF become a force for good within public education in Detroit and Michigan.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Build and maintain Tableau dashboards that provide actionable insights, tailoring visualizations to meet the needs of DCF staff
  • Use your analytic expertise to guide project teams to set goals, create research plans, collect data, and determine metrics for projects’ success
  • Collaborate with teammates to tell a meaningful story about research findings, complete with participant feedback and compelling data visualization
  • Search for opportunities to improve our reporting by experimenting with different design approaches and formats
  • Provide insights and infographics for DCF leadership on school performance, data trends, state and national school and educator talent data, and other relevant topics as needed
  • Develop a culture of progress monitoring among DCF staff and partners to maximize outcomes for students
  • Assist with the collection of student-level and school-level data to ensure accurate progress monitoring
  • Actively seek out opportunities to improve the data collection process for DCF and our grant partners
  • Maintain state, city, and school datasets, ensuring that the data is accurate and up to date
  • Maintain all DCF data systems to ensure accuracy and relevancy

Approach

We expect our Analysts to bring:

  • A passion for getting better at analysis.  It’s rare that anyone comes in with across-the-board mastery, and you should plan on intentionally growing your skills while here to fill out your toolkit.  You know a programming language and have taught yourself an analysis technique.
  • Superlative attention to detail.  Our work, and our clients’ actions, rest on the bedrock of our analysts’ results. We’ll count on you to surface and resolve issues along the way, as the integrity of your final product must be unquestionable.
  • A healthy sense of skepticism… You’ll evaluate the relative merits of different approaches, hold the line on what we can conclude when results are mixed or unclear, and ensure your time is being spent in the right places.
  • … balanced by practical optimism.  We move quickly. In our work, it’s often the case that even limited findings represent an improvement, and our analysts must be comfortable with ambiguity.
  • An ability to develop and deliver crisp, clean messages. Whether in writing or on the phone, your communications are clear, articulate, and concise. You understand your audience and can explain complex information and data to a variety of technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Build relationships. You’ll regularly partner with internal and external clients. You have an ability to connect and build relationships with diverse communities.

Core Competencies

  • Good data sense/numeracy: you notice when the Ns don’t look right and realize the implications of using a weighted mean versus a straight average of subgroup averages
  • Experience in data processing: cleaning, governance, and manipulation in Excel and Tableau
  • Experience designing and maintaining user-friendly, engaging, and aesthetically pleasing data dashboards
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and coordination, with strong project management skills and excellent attention to detail
  • A commitment to partnering with others on shared goals, and an ability to work independently to identify and solve problems
  • Experience working with and clearly communicating K-12 educational data
  • Comfort with receiving and sharing constructive feedback
  • A commitment to advancing anti-racism in your approach to data collection and analysis
  • Comfort with ambiguity and openness to adapting to changing needs
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and prioritize work to meet deadlines

Salary Range: $70-$90k annually plus a comprehensive and competitive benefits package, including flexible paid time off
