Background

Compass Academy is a bilingual Middle School within Denver Public Schools with an emphasis on academic excellence and whole child development serving grades 6-8. 

Mission and Vision 

The mission of Compass Academy is to enable its students to realize their unique talents while mastering core academic skills and developing the social-emotional strengths and learner and leader competencies required for adult success in the 21st century. Compass Academy will use a team of diverse City Year national service members, combined with advances in the learning sciences, to create a personalized learning environment where all members of the school community passionately pursue deeper learning.

Position Summary

The Director of Operations is responsible for much of the day-to-day functioning of Compass Academy, allowing instructional staff to focus on our students.  S/he will report to the Executive Director and Middle School Director and will work in close partnership with the rest of the Leadership Team to achieve Compass’ mission to serve all students.  

The Director of Operations will oversee the following:

Finance, Accounting, and Payroll

  • Oversee all purchasing for the school, including invoicing and managing the school credit cards and Amazon account ensuring timely payment of all bills
  • In partnership with our consulting group, reconcile finances and tag to the appropriate budget categories on a monthly basis
  • Submit monthly payroll-preprocesses to our consulting group for monthly payroll
  • Support and periodically audit year to date and long-term budget outlooks alongside our consulting group and Executive Director

Human Resources

  • Onboard, hire, and set up all newly hired staff with technology access, district information system access, insurance enrollment, hiring/payroll entry, and internal processes/procedures
  • Working with our benefits associate, oversee the open enrollment period
  • Manage hiring platform and post new job descriptions when available
  • Serve as Title IX Investigator for the school
  • Maintain an internal document containing all staff information including demographic and contact information, position qualifications, PTO requests, etc.
  • Serve as point of contact with our substitute management company and ensure coverage for all classes

Student Information Systems

  • Create school’s bell schedule and master student schedule, ensuring an equitable teaching load, appropriate student class offerings, and cohesive cohorting of student groups accounting for the large number of specific student schedule needs on our campus (SPED, MLL, reading/math levels, etc.)
  • Schedule all students and staff in Infinite Campus for the school year
  • Update schedules as needed throughout the year based on one-off and subpopulation level needs
  • Supervise gradebook set up and usage for teachers and finalize quarterly report cards for distribution to students and families
  • Oversee attendance taking procedures across the campus with the support of the Office Manager and ensure accurate and timely attendance is taken
  • Monitor attendance trends over time and communicate concerns with the Leadership Team and our wellbeing staff

Technology

  • In partnership with our technology consultant, oversee all student and staff technology use, maintenance, and purchasing, including Chromebooks, staff laptops, Smart boards, and others
  • Manage the school’s Google Suite including the Calendar, Drive, and Admin sites
  • Update the school’s website as needed through Squarespace
  • Troubleshoot and repair technology problems as they arise and escalate more difficult situations to our technology partners
  • Lead trainings for staff on new technology platforms and systems

Shared Campus Partnership and Facilities

  •  Engage with shared campus partners (school leaders from the two other schools on our campus, custodial members, and safety/security team) on a monthly basis to direct campus-wide goals and priorities
  • Serve as intermediary between school and district purchased services – custodial, transportation, Charter Support team, and district technology partners
  • Develop and train staff on the Emergency Crisis Management Plan for the year
  • Support teachers and staff with room set up at the start of the year and clean up at the end

Recruitment and Enrollment

  • Oversee Compass recruitment and enrollment efforts with the support of the Family, Community and Enrollment Coordinator to ensure a fully enrolled and registered class each year
  • Support Office Manager in planning for and running fall registration for families
  • Support registration and enrollment process for new students enrolling mid-year

Standardized Assessments

  • Serve as Site Assessment Leader for CMAS testing in the spring each year.  This includes scheduling the exams, training teachers on administration, and all back-end data entry required for the exams
  • Serve as secondary Site Assessment Leader for other school-wide exams

Management

  • Manage the Office Manager and Family, Community, and Enrollment Coordinator as your direct reports
  • Conduct weekly check-ins with direct reports and coach them in their practice
  • Create and maintain a team culture within the Front Office wherein members know the basic functionings of each role and are able to support when someone is out

 

The Director of Operations also supports in the following:

Leadership Team Member

  • Participate in weekly meetings with the leadership team to determine schoolwide priorities, develop professional development sessions, and plan ahead for upcoming events
  • Participate in quarterly internal reviews

School Culture

  • ​​Greet visitors, students, families, and staff with professionalism, patience, and responsiveness – provide a welcoming presence for the front office for all guests
  • Correspond with and get to know families to support their needs
  • Occasional coverage of the office phone and other Office Manager roles
  • Support campus wide cultural expectations and norms through hallway presence, lunch/recess support, and general behavior management

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of professional experience in operations
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Proficient or fluent in Spanish 
  • Flexibility, resourcefulness, and ability to manage multiple simultaneous workflows.
  • A positive, do-what-it-takes attitude, great sense of humor
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience maintaining strong relationships with community stakeholders, campus partners, and school district departments
  • Experience working with K-12 students in learning environments
  • Strong technical and troubleshooting skills
  • Strong data management skills in Excel including sorting/filtering data, using formulas, and managing large data spreadsheets (strongly preferred)
  • Experience in a progressive and/or charter school setting (preferred)
  • Experience managing a small team (preferred)
  • Relationship building skills with 6-8th grade students (preferred)
