Position Summary: This position is responsible for leading and implementing special education programs and services for students with disabilities in accordance with federal and state regulations; working with the Superintendent to provide instructional leadership team that improves student learning; providing leadership for curriculum, assessment, and professional development for staff; and providing leadership in development, implementation, and evaluation of special education staff.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities: This list of essential job functions is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary. Depending upon individual assignment, the employee may perform all or a combination of several of the following duties:
- Develop and implement a data-driven program to increase student achievement and meet individual student goals
- Subscribe to and practice a philosophy of teamwork and professionalism
- Develop and manage multiple budgets in conformance with budget allocations, district fiscal procedures, and State and Federal fund source restrictions
- Work cooperatively with teams from Human Resources, Finance, and Learning & Teaching departments relative to staffing levels, budgeting, and compliance
- Hire, supervise, and evaluate staff to promote effective performance
- Manage and align staff and fiscal resources while fulfilling legal and compliance responsibilities
- Ensure timely response to Federal, State, and local grants and reporting requirements
- Assign, supervise, and evaluate special education programs and staff
- Supervise School Psychologists, Counselors, Occupational/Physical Therapists, Speech Language Pathologists
- Serve as the district contact person for 504’s
- Supervise district’s nursing services
- Assist instructional staff in aligning curriculum, instruction, and assessment with relevant standards and learning goals
- Review and approve student files for special education eligibility and placement
- Work with principals to develop an atmosphere of respect, interest, and enthusiasm for delivery of services to students
- Work positively with a diverse range of parents, staff, agencies, and community members to establish healthy involvement in planning, implementation, and evaluation of programs pertaining to special education students
- Establish professional and ongoing contacts with students, staff, and parents
- Implement and comply with Federal and State laws and regulations
- Demonstrate effective oral and written communications
- Listen and partner with students, families, and community members from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds
- Commit to helping every building create the capacity to serve students with disabilities related to social cognition, behavior challenges, and other special needs through active participation and training of staff
- Respond to parents and building needs in a timely and collaborative manner
- Manage resources to meet legal requirements
- Comply with all district policies and procedures
- Comply with the Code of Professional Conduct
- Perform related duties as assigned
Reports to: Superintendent
Supervisory responsibility: ESS staff
Budget and/or Resource Responsibility: Responsible for the Special Education budget.
