Job Description

Position Summary: The Mathematics Instructor at Futures Academy must be energetic, innovative and passionate about implementing trauma-informed teaching and learning techniques in a multi-level classroom that helps students prepare for careers, college-level coursework, the Accuplacer, and the GED. This is a year-round, full time position and located in Aurora, Colorado.

Futures Academy serves students ages 17 to 21, who have too few credits to receive a traditional high school diploma, but are interested in furthering their education and pursuing post-secondary opportunities. Through a partnership with Colorado Youth for a Change (CYC) and Aurora Public Schools, Futures Academy provides students with the resources, guidance, and academic instruction that allow them to earn college credits (up to an associate’s degree), technical certifications, a GED, or a combination of the three. Futures Academy combines a competency-based approach to teaching and learning with restorative practices and targeted case management to help students overcome barriers to academic and personal success in a safe and supportive learning community that respects and values the strengths and experiences of each student.

Essential Functions
The primary duties of a classroom instructor include:
• Contribute to a curriculum and instruction team – consisting of the Instructors, Academic Support Specialists, Principal, and Instructional Coordinator – that continuously develops and refines teaching and learning techniques
• Integrate elements of competency-based education into classroom practices, by:
Connecting lessons and activities to specific, measurable, student-friendly learning targets
Developing and utilizing student-friendly assessment tools that monitor attainment of learning targets, as well as enable productive dialogue with students about their academic progress

Establishing a student-centered classroom in which the instructor acts as facilitator, guide, or coach and
Developing flexible, individualized learning pathways that allow students to make progress regardless of where, how, or when they are in class

• Differentiate instruction and materials according to students’ learning needs, interests, and goals
• Use standardized assessment tools such as TABE, Accuplacer, and GED Ready to evaluate students’ entry points and academic growth throughout the program
• Access and utilize data and reports available in the CYC database to improve and support job functions.
• Collaborate with Academic Support Specialists and volunteers about the best ways to leverage time and resources while striving to meet the unique needs and goals of all students
• Coordinate with the entire instructional team to maintain consistency in practices and classroom norms across content areas
• Work in conjunction with student advisors to address any barriers to student learning
• Make suggestions for the purchase of resources to support teaching and learning
• Integrate technology with learning goals
• Other duties as assigned by the Principal and Instructional Coordinator

The primary duties of the mathematics instructor include:

• Teach skills and concepts related to Mathematical Thinking, Numeracy, Data Analysis, Algebra, and Geometry
• Design and implement lessons, activities, and projects that contextualize mathematics and provide real world applications specific to students’ postsecondary and professional goals
• Provide students with opportunities to develop problem-solving, critical thinking, and abstract reasoning skills within mathematics contexts, regardless of their incoming abilities and experiences with math

Other Duties

The primary duties of a Future Academy staff member include:

• Integrating CYC’s culture statements into daily practice: Passion for CYC’s Mission, striving for professional growth and learning, inclusion, professionalism, and appropriate boundaries.
• Working as a team with other staff to help orient and retain students in the program
• Maintaining high expectations for all students regardless of their incoming abilities and experiences
• Participating on committees that develop, improve, and maintain school structures
• Participating in and seeking out professional development opportunities provided by  Futures Academy, CYC, or external organizations
• Attend and participate in staff meetings as required
• Run errands as needed using personal transportation
• Attend relevant community and school meetings
• Other duties as assigned by the Principal

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Computer skills in Microsoft Word and Excel, along with
• Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills
• Desire and ability to work within a team
• Desire and ability to work with diverse student populations, at-risk youth, and English language learners
• A willingness to engage in ongoing personal and professional reflection and growth, and a desire and ability to work within a team
• Demonstration of clear and appropriate boundaries with youth
• A passionate and committed belief that youth can rise above seemingly insurmountable obstacles and return to school, graduate, and succeed into post-secondary education
• Dependable transportation and being insurable as a driver on the auto liability policy of Colorado Youth for a Change is preferred
• Commitment to supporting & being a part of CYC’s effort to continually strive toward inclusivity, growth & appreciation of the organization and each individual’s unique strengths and perspectives, including a commitment to self-development identity work
• Dedication to engaging staff and students across social identities
• Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred

Minimum Qualifications
• Hold Colorado teaching license (or be currently eligible for one with the appropriate endorsement for this position or be otherwise “highly qualified” for the position as defined by the Colorado Department of Education)
• Demonstrate solid knowledge of subject matter.

Experience teaching math to secondary or postsecondary students, particularly in alternative settings

We offer a competitive salary. Exempt position and starting salary is depending upon experience.
