Operations / Administration School Safety and Security Coordinator

Job Description

Primary Purpose:

The School Safety and Security Coordinator will lead and coordinate efforts district-wide to implement best practices to ensure the safety of our students, staff, and visitors in our schools. This is a new position designed to be the district leader of school safety training and response protocols, helping us enhance our current policies and practices. The goals are to ensure our schools operate safely, implement all safety protocols consistently, prevent school violence from occurring, and respond appropriately to any threats or incidents that occur. We are looking for a candidate with passion and experience in evidence-based approaches to school safety who can work collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders including School Resource Officers, school and district leaders, students, teachers, community members, and staff.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Training

  • Lead the district in establishing and maintaining a safe learning environment through clear protocols, coordination, and safety programs
  • Persistently seek continuing education programs and information to remain knowledgeable on current safety and security trends and technologies
  • Conduct annual security related professional development sessions to foster an ever increasing atmosphere of emergency preparedness and safety, including substitute teachers and other itinerant staff
  • Work collaboratively with local law enforcement and assist school principals with scheduling, planning, and execution of yearly safety drills
  • Ensure District staff are aware and trained on the emergency operation plans to include, but not limited to, knowledge of the incident command system, emergency response protocols, rally points and reunification procedures

Coordination

  • Serve as District liaison to the School Resource Officers (SROs); coordinate program operations with law enforcement agencies and individual schools as needed.
  • Manage the emergency operation plans for each school in the District, including yearly updates, additions, reviews and staff assignments.
  • Ensure that the District abides by all state and federal laws applicable to the scheduling, planning, and execution of safety drills and other requirements
  • Conduct reoccurring security audits of District assets to ensure operability; oversee repairs as needed
  • Oversee the District’s visitor control systems and procedures
  • Work cooperatively with federal, state and local agencies to ensure District compliance with current laws, regulation, investigations or other tasks as requested

Response

  • Respond appropriately to crisis situations 24/7 (i.e. emergencies, employee/parent concerns, etc.), including the deployment of emergency response personnel to incidents
  • Lead District security/threat assessment teams
  • Be available and visible to District personnel and students for safety and security related concerns and needs
  • Assist in or conduct investigations into violations of non-academic regulations or any other incident as deemed appropriate by the Superintendent or COO

Other

  • Display the highest ethical and professional behavior in working with students, parents, school personnel and outside agencies associated with the district
  • Other duties as assigned by the COO and/or Superintendent.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree with a major pertinent to the position requirements: Law Enforcement, Security, Emergency Planning, Social Sciences, Criminology or related field.
  • Five years or more work experience in law enforcement, school safety, private security, crisis management, or violence prevention
  • In-depth knowledge of security measures, security policies & procedures, and crisis management.
  • Colorado Drivers License

Skills and Competencies

  • Knowledge of law enforcement activities including patrol, investigation and tactical operations
  • Working knowledge of Colorado juvenile code and criminal statutes
  • Proficient computer skills including Google products
  • Knowledge of security equipment including access control, CCTV, intrusion, fire systems
  • Understanding of NIMS, ICS and school emergency planning
  • Effective and positive oral and written communication skills
  • Interpersonal relations skills
  • Critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Knowledge of school alarm monitoring and reporting systems and state radio systems.
  • Physically able to respond appropriately in emergency situations.
  • Working knowledge of Emergency Response Planning and Incident Command System.
  • Ability to diffuse and manage volatile and stressful situations.
  • Ability and willingness to be on call and/or respond to calls 24/7

SALARY RANGE AND DAYS WORKED

Salary Range per year: $84,000 to $100,000 depending on qualified experience.

Job Category: Exempt

Days worked: 252 days/year (with paid personal time, paid vacation days, and paid time off for holidays and district non-work days such as during winter break and spring breaks)
