Job Title: Accountant
Pay Program: Classified FLSA Status: Exempt
Reports to: Accounting Supervisor Pay Range:  CX 9
Range starts at: $55,271
Work Year: 260 days/8 hours

SUMMARY:  Responsible for maintaining the District’s General Ledger.  Provide accurate and timely recording and reporting of District financial information in compliance with GAAP, Governmental Accounting Standards, and Colorado Financial Policies and Procedures.

Job Responsibility Descriptions
  1. Responsible for analyzing a variety of fiscal data and specific accounting operations for the purpose of providing written reference, conveying information, complying with district, state and federal regulations, determining feasibility of services with budget parameters, ensuring efficiency and adherence to established internal control policies and procedures, making recommendations and/or maximizing use of funds.  Create, process and post journal entries after analyzing and reconciling revenue, expenditure and balance sheet accounts. Analyze District cash flow, and transfer funds to and from investment and bank accounts as determined necessary.  Reconcile bank accounts to general ledger.
  1. Responsible for training accounting technicians regarding accounting procedures and software use.  Review and post journal entries created by other accountants, technicians, or through the systems interface processes to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  1. Inform and assist staff within the Fiscal Services Department as well as individuals within the District regarding financial procedures for the purpose of providing necessary information for making decisions, taking appropriate action and complying with established fiscal guidelines.
  1. Help others use and review the District’s financial and payroll software and systems.
  1. Transfer and record funds for self-insurance plans.
  1. Prepare written reconciliations of bank and investment accounts for review by the Accounting Supervisor.
  1. Prepare and review substitute timecard batch for payroll, perform edit checks prior to payroll, set up and transfer direct deposit file, review payroll posting to general ledger, and make adjustments as necessary.
  1. Prepare year-end adjustments and worksheets for audit, transmit financial data to Colorado Department of Education in conformance with Colorado standard chart of accounts.
  1. Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field required
  • More than two years and up to and including three years of experience in accounting preferred

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS or CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Criminal background check required for hire
  • CPA preferred

TECHNICAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES:

  • Possess strong oral and written communication skills
  • Possess strong interpersonal relations skills
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of governmental financial accounting, auditing, reporting and best business practices in accounting
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Strong computer and accounting software skills
  • Ability to promote and follow Board of Education policies and building and department procedures
  • Ability to communicate, interact and work effectively and cooperatively with people from diverse ethnic and
    educational backgrounds
  • Ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilize appropriate safety equipment and report unsafe conditions to the appropriate administrator

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT OPERATING KNOWLEDGE:

  • Operating knowledge of financial and payroll software
  • Operating knowledge of and experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and E-Mail software
  • Operating knowledge of and experience with typical office equipment, such as telephones, copier, etc
