Operations / Administration Food Service Helper

Job Description

Performs all food preparation/service tasks in accordance with all applicable laws, regulations, and standards for food preparation, food handling, food serving, and food storage in a school facility; ensures adherence to established sanitation/health procedures; follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees, students, and other individuals; conducts food quality evaluation by placing food samples in cooler for three-day evaluation, per established procedures.

Ensures availability of adequate materials to conduct work activities; organizes and maintains storage areas; places stock in coolers, freezers, stockroom, or other areas; conducts counts of food items or inventory items as needed; rotates food and supplies in storage areas to ensure utilization within expiration dates; retrieves supplies from storage areas.

Performs various preparatory tasks in support of meal preparation; opens cans of food/condiments; washes, peels, chops, slices, or grates food such as fruits, vegetables, meats, cheeses, breads, and other items; assembles sandwiches, salads, fruit cups, and other items; mixes salad dressings; places individual portions into bowls, cups, or other containers; prepares tea, coffee, or beverage mixes; fills cups with ice; wraps food items for concessions; delivers food items to various areas of kitchen/cafeteria.

Assists in cooking, baking, heating, assembling and preparing foods as instructed and in accordance with recipes and directions.

Sets up food serving lines, tables, or condiment bars; places dishes, utensils, paper supplies, condiments, food items, and other items into proper locations; serves food during meal times; replenishes pre-served items on food lines as needed; checks temperature of hot/cold food items.

Breaks down and cleans serving lines and other areas at conclusion of meals; removes items and places in proper locations; records leftover foods; wraps and stores unused portions per established procedure, ensuring sanitary conditions and storage at appropriate temperatures; washes tables in dining area; restocks dishware, silverware, and other items.

Cleans and maintains the kitchen and storage areas; washes/scrubs pots, pans, and cooking utensils; cleans appliances, equipment, kitchen surfaces, and eating areas; sweeps, mops, and washes floors.

Operates dishwasher to clean kitchen dishware and utensils; loads dirty dishes, trays, utensils, or other items into dishwasher; unloads clean dishes from dishwasher; restocks cleaned dishware in appropriate locations.

Stacks cafeteria trays in designated location; replenishes trays as needed.

Removes bags of garbage from trash containers in kitchen/cafeteria areas; places new bags into trash containers; breaks down boxes for trash; takes garbage/trash to dumpster or other trash receptacle.

Performs laundry functions; operates washer and dryer to clean towels, aprons, dishcloths, or other materials; hangs, folds, and restocks laundry items.

Operates various machinery and equipment associated with food preparation, food service, and related department activities, which may include a stove, oven, fryer, steamer, grater, slicer, food processor, mixer, refrigerator, freezer, dishwasher, steam table, coffee machine, can opener, scale, cooking utensils, measuring utensils, thermometer, washer, dryer, cash register, calculator, or telephone; monitors equipment operations to ensure safety and proper operations; reports faulty equipment.

Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, school officials, teachers, students, parents, vendors, delivery personnel, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED not required. Two months previous experience and/or training involving food service in a school environment, in an institutional setting, or for large groups; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
