Reporter or Editor National reporter
Chalkbeat is looking for a passionate, enterprising reporter to join our national reporting team.
Chalkbeat is the nonprofit news organization committed to covering one of America’s most important stories: the effort to improve schools for all children, especially those who have historically lacked access to a quality education. We’re in five locations — Colorado, Detroit, Indiana, New York, and Tennessee — and growing. Read more about our mission and values.
Now, we’re looking for a reporter to cover the education trends, people, and ideas that span the entire country and shape what happens locally.
You’ll be responsible for writing a range of stories at a fast pace. A typical week in your reporting life might include explaining why a research finding matters to teachers; synthesizing local stories about challenges facing refugee students; unpacking what the latest news out of the U.S. education department means for states, districts, teachers, and students; and chronicling education policy cameos on your favorite TV show.
You’re a good fit for this position if:
- You’ve thrived as a journalist in a fast-paced, high-volume news environment.
- You’ve previously covered education locally or nationally and have more questions than when you got started.
- You geek out over research and data and have proven that you can engage readers on complex topics.
- You believe high-quality journalism can make a difference to the lives of students, the work of policy makers, and the strength of our democracy.
How to ApplyPlease send a résumé, five relevant clips, and a cover letter explaining your interest in the position to email@example.com. Include “national reporter” in the subject line.
Chalkbeat is dedicated to equal employment opportunities for all applicants and employees. Chalkbeat encourages people of all races, colors, national origins, ancestries, creeds, religions, genders, ages, disabilities, veteran status, sexual orientations and marital statuses to apply.
